About Melonpan

Melonpan (melon bread, melon pan, melon buns) is a treat commonly found in Japanese bakeries. It is made up of a round, fluffy sweet bun topped with a sweeter thin cookie coating. It can also be filled, usually with chocolate or raisins. Its name is somewhat misleading; typically, there is no melon flavor used in making melonpan. The name instead refers to the shape and texture of the baked good. The characteristic scoring marks on top of the bun give it a melon-like appearance. Some recipies, however, do call for adding a little melon extract to the topping, but this is by no means a requirement. Melonpan is very similar to Pineapple Bread, as well as Mexican sweet bread.

Why Melonpan?

Ever since first going to Japan in 2002, I became addicted to Japanese bakeries. Often, the goods sold within are not only delicious, but lower in sugar than most American treats. Although there are many delicious items available for purchase, none seduced my tastebuds quite like melonpan. With my first bite, the light, fluffy bread and the crisp cookie topping melted in my mouth. I became a lifetime fan in that moment.
